Black spiny sea fan in metal circle
PU1011-4
Sea fans are colonies of sessile marine polyps, supported by a branched skeleton known as gorgonin. Each polyp has eight tentacles that filter plankton carried by the currents. Unlike photosynthetic corals, sea fans grow perpendicularly to the current, in order to maximise the filtration surface.
This black spiny sea fan, originating from the Indo-Pacific region, is notable for the very fine, almost nerve-like pattern of its branches.
It is displayed in a metal circle using an exclusive design developed by Objet de Curiosité, which highlights the natural architecture of the specimen and turns it into a true marine curiosity sculpture, fully in line with the spirit of the cabinet of curiosities.
