The Salamis parhassus, also known as the “Mother-of-Pearl Butterfly,” is a diurnal butterfly native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its wingspan ranges from 65 to 90 mm, with reddish-brown wings adorned with iridescent blue spots, giving it a pearly sheen. This butterfly inhabits tropical forests, savannas, and clearings, where it feeds on the nectar of wildflowers, playing a crucial role in pollination. It is a tireless traveler, capable of covering long distances in search of food. The life cycle of the Salamis parhassus follows the four typical stages of butterflies, though some aspects remain mysterious. Threatened by deforestation and agricultural expansion, it suffers from the loss of its natural habitat. Although not classified as endangered, its preservation depends on protecting its environment. Admired for its beauty, it is a jewel of African biodiversity.
