Fossil skull of BISON PRISCUS - Ukraine

This large prehistoric skull comes from the steppe bison (BISON PRISCUS), an iconic species of the Late Pleistocene that roamed the cold plains along the Dnieper River (present-day Kamianske, Ukraine).
Bison priscus lived in small herds, feeding mainly on the short grasses of the glacial steppes and sharing this landscape with woolly mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses and wild horses.
This perfectly preserved fossil has been stabilised and cleaned without recolouring. Displayed on a wooden base (overall height 63 cm), it shows an exceptional span of over one metre — in a region where the very largest recorded specimens barely exceed 1.30 m (the current record being held by a skull in the Moscow Museum).
The species disappeared around 10,000 BCE, due both to the retreat of the steppe environment (climate change) and hunting pressure from the first human groups.
The modern European bison (BISON BONASUS) is regarded as its direct descendant, with a smaller side but very similar social behaviour.
A truly remarkable natural curiosity — a specimen that can be both admired and narrated. A genuine statement piece in the world of the cabinet of curiosities.
