Tessellated stick insect - Diesbachia tamyris - female, pink wings open
PUIN063-2
The tessellated stick insect, Diesbachia tamyris, comes from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly from the regions of Malaysia and Indonesia. It mainly inhabits dense environments rich in vegetation, where it easily camouflages itself among branches and leaves. The mimicry of this species is so advanced that the stick insect can remain motionless for hours, or even days, to evade predators. Both sexes of this species have pink and black patterned wings. The female, generally larger than the male, is particularly impressive when her wings are spread. These wings, though rarely used for flight, serve primarily as a defense mechanism, surprising predators with their bright colors.
