Polished green malachite Large, on brass base
PUMI1584-2
This block of Malachite is extracted from the copper belt mines in Katanga province, Congo. Its intense green hue is the result of the oxidation of copper. Its polished surface reveals a fascinating network of concentric circles and volutes, like a mapping of geological processes.
Used since ancient times as a pigment in painting for its bright blue-green tones, malachite was even mentioned by Pliny the Elder in 77 A.D. This link between art and nature is found in this room, whose organic shape and silky finish invite to sensuality.
