Lunar meteorite Araouane 001 (feldspathic breccia)
PUMI2728
This mineral may ring a bell for you: it has already passed over your head several times! Discovered near the village of Arouane in Mali in 2024, this stone comes from much farther away. Ejected from the lunar surface by a powerful impact, it drifted through space before falling back to Earth thousands of years ago.
Its lunar origin is unmistakable: its mineral composition — rich in plagioclase and poor in iron — perfectly matches the rocks collected from the Moon’s highlands during the Apollo missions.
This dark, finely speckled feldspathic breccia captures in a few centimeters the story of a cosmic collision and an unlikely interplanetary journey. This piece of moon weighed 374gr. And it’s one of the 27 slices that exist on earth.
