Barnacle MEGABALANUS TINTINNABULUM

AN041

These clusters of barnacles (MEGABALANUS TINTINNABULUM) come from the coastal waters of the Philippines. Often mistaken for coral, they are actually the calcareous shells of sessile crustaceans that live fixed in place, filtering seawater for food.
With their delicate cirri extended into the current, they capture plankton and microscopic life drifting by.
Displayed on a wooden base, this natural colony becomes a small marine sculpture — both fragile and architectural.
