Cassis Cornuta (Horned Helmet) on brass base

PU1165-2

The Cassis Cornuta, also called the Horned Helmet, is one of the largest and heaviest sea shells, weighing here 1,6 kg. This specimen is native to the tropical oceans: Red Sea and Polynesia. This mollusc, as a predator, feeds mainly on other shells, which it hunts at night. During the day, it partially buries itself in the sand, hiding its robust and colorful shell.
Its shell is distinguished by shades of pink, orange and beige, with a pearly interior. This shell has long been appreciated not only for its beauty, but also by the Neapolitan artisans of Torre del Greco to carve cameos. Napoleon 1st has also greatly revived the fashion of cameos since he had even on his crown. Today, it is particularly popular as a decorative object.
This specimen is mounted on an elegant brass base, which enhances the shell while adding a contemporary touch to this marine piece. A perfect nod to collectors of curiosities and lovers of exotic marine decoration.
