Shell of TONNA OLEARIUM – Negros Occidental, Philippines

PU1260-1

The shell of TONNA OLEARIUM, also known as the “giant tun shell,” is easily recognized by its smooth, lustrous surface and spherical form. It belongs to the Tonnidae family, a group of marine gastropods whose rounded silhouettes recall ancient amphorae — hence its Latin name olearium, referring to the oil jars of Antiquity.
This specimen comes from the island of Negros Occidental, in the Philippines, and reflects the remarkable adaptation of these mollusks to tropical sandy seabeds. Their lightweight shells allow them to burrow partially while moving across the ocean floor.
Mounted on a brass base, this natural curiosity becomes a refined decorative object, perfectly in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities where art and nature meet with quiet elegance.
