Starfish PENTACERASTER sp.
PU1257-3
This starfish belongs to the genus PENTACERASTER, recognizable by its robust arms and dorsal surface covered with rigid tubercles arranged in regular series.
Its bicolored tones, ranging from pale beige to reddish-violet, reflect the chromatic diversity of this group, widely distributed across tropical and subtropical seas.
As with all starfish, the ventral side is covered with podia – tiny tubular feet – which enable both locomotion and the capture of small preys, such as mollusks and crustaceans.
Mounted on a black metal base, this specimen becomes a true marine curiosity echoing the tradition of cabinets of curiosities that, since the 18th century, have collected nature’s most extraordinary forms.
