Railway sleepers and black marble inlay
MB043
Raw and precious. The body of this column is made of recycled railway sleepers, of a rather unrefined appearance, but lightly sanded to get a soft touch. These wooden sleepers are still widely used in some parts of India, and they are in "Sal wood" (Shorea robusta), a strong tree found only in India. The contrast comes from the black marble with grey veins inlayed on the top and sides. The refinement of polished marble and raw wood: a perfect column for outsider Art!
