frogfish (BATRACHOIDES TRISPINOSUS) under glass case
PU1246
Toadfishes (BATRACHOIDES TRISPINOSUS) are fishes living on sandy or coral sea floors in tropical waters. Their flattened head, elongated body and ventrally positioned pelvic fins allow them to remain motionless on the substrate while waiting for prey.
This pair of specimens, collected in the Visayas Islands (Philippines), retains its natural pinkish pigmentation, which has been lightly enhanced during preparation in order to reproduce the colours observed in situ.
They are displayed in a brass case, together with a fragment of beige gorgonian skeleton, in the spirit of a diorama, like in old museums.
As diorama, that highlights the unusual morphology of these marine curiosities.
