Galena, Bulgaria, framed in a Cage
PUMI2578
This large cube of galena comes from the Septemvri mine (formerly known as the 9 September mine) in Bulgaria, known for producing well-formed cubic crystals and a characteristic silver metallic sheen. This lead sulphide (PbS), sometimes called “silver-bearing lead”, often contains traces of silver, which has made it a sought-after mineral for industrial use.
This large cube, which seems to be formed of hundreds of agglomerated cubic forms, is also enhanced with a little white quartz that came in a second time.
Galena has also made history in technology. In 1906, Karl Ferdinand Braun and Guglielmo Marconi used a crystal of galena to build a radio station capable of receiving the waves. This was the beginning of the famous galena stations, a major advance in radio reception.
