TUFA from Nevada on black base

This stone is a Tufa from Nevada and it was formed 10 000 to 20 000 years ago when an inland sea called Lahotan was covering half of Nevada. the Tufa formed on the sea floor when natural mineral springs came in contact with the saline lake water. The dissolved minerals (calcium carbonate and silica) precipitated and solidified on the sea floor. The holes are precisely where the spring was jetting into the lake. Bizare and unique.
