lower Cretaceous ammonite, Dactylioceras on brass base
PUFO386-1
This ammonite, a predatory fossil shell that lived in the Lower Jurassic 180 Million years ago, must have had a "swabian" accent (the dialect spoken in the mountains of Baden-Württemberg). The black limestone of Holzmaden is famous for the perfect preservation of fossils, thanks to the low oxygen content of its bituminous limestone. Many ichthyosaurs or plesiosaurus and crinoids are found in these schists in a black matrix, which gives stunning natural still life.
