Hardhead sponge on black base
PU1014-1
This marine animal from Florida feeds by filtering the water through the cavities of its body, built with a dense network of resistant and elastic fibers: spongin. It meets on coral reefs where it mixes with gorgons and corals between 2 and 50 meters deep. Cleaning shrimps often inhabit its outer crevasses. These organisms are fixed in adulthood, but the mobility of the larvae facilitates its dissemination.
Hardhead sponge' strange name is due to its fairly rigid surface.
