Atlantic sea whip on brass base
PU1029-3
Leptogorgia virgulata is a gorgonian. It's common name is sea whip, but it has not always been black. Alive it has a strong red to orange color. It does not have the rigid calcium carbonate skeleton possessed by the true corals, but its black skeleton is the home of thousands of polyps -cylindrical, stalklike forms with a mouth and eight tentacles at the upper end-,that feed on plankton. This sea whip comes from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, as it can be seen from the Maryland to Brazil.
