White Bryozoan under glass

This white structure is the skeleton left by a colony of Bryozoans in the Mediterranean Sea: Pentapora fascalis. These animals, very similar to coral polyps, live in colonies hooked all their life to the same substrate, connected by kind of nerves, sharing food . We know 5000 species with diferent shapes, sizes, and structures, rigid (limestone) or flexible (chitinous). The visible part, which protects the bryozoaire (Bryozons) can be disc , fan, slices, corkscrew, stick,... shaped. When they die, they become so many little touches of lace in the ocean.
