This fossil could make you think of pumkins painted by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Yet it is completely natural. The Clypeaster Sand Dollar is a domed sea urchin that first appeared in the Miocene about 23 million years ago. This beautiful specimen is specially curved and it has been slightly polished, which gives it this shine. It is a Clypeaster Scillae of 17 Million years old (lower Miocene). Their current descendants are much less domed and live buried in the sand. They only go out at night to feed.
