Pencil Urchin ( Stylocidaris affinis) behind a magnifying glass
PU1111-2
For Pacific sea urchins, it’s like a stationery shop: there are several kinds of pencils! This species, Stylocidaris affinis, has rather sharp "pencils", with clear rings on some of them. These are of course its spikes. And you can meet it from 30 to -1000 meters deep in the Cuba - Carribean area . It is a rather nocturnal animal that tries to be discreet during the day by staying hidden under the rocks. This one will not be discreet at all, behind a vertical magnifying glass
