Polished Rove goat horn, brass base
PU1072-4
This beautiful twisted horn comes from a species of goat adapted to the dry weather of the Mediterranean. Goats were the first animals domesticated in the Neolithic period when men stopped moving around living hunting and gathering. Natural selection, helped by man, gave this species: the Rove goat. It has its origins in the Middle East (Pakistan, Iran) where a wild species with huge twisted horns still remains: the Markhor. The Rove goat was used as a guide for sheep herds carrying out transhumance.
