Lyre gorgonian on black stand

PU1186-2

This orange lyre gorgonian (Ctenocella pectinata), native to the Indian Ocean, gets its name from its distinctive shape, reminiscent of a lyre. Like corals, gorgonians are colonies of sessile polyps that feed on plankton. This species grows perpendicularly to ocean currents to maximize nutrient capture. Its gorgonine skeleton, both flexible and sturdy, allows it to withstand strong deep-sea currents.
Presented on a black base, this piece is collected in accordance with local regulations and is not subject to CITES restrictions.
