Brown gorgonian
PU1191
This brown gorgonian, from the waters of Micronesia, is a remarkable specimen of colonial marine polyps. Each polyp has 8 tentacles that filter plankton from the ocean currents. Unlike many marine species, gorgonians grow perpendicular to the currents rather than towards the light, maximizing their ability to capture nutrients. Its skeleton, made of gorgonine, is both flexible and strong. Mounted on a brass metal and marble base, this piece highlights the raw beauty of coral reefs.
This one has a variety of very serrated oyster attached to a branch.
