62g CANYON DIABLO meteorite (US), levitating horizontally

PUMI2659

This 62gr. meteorite comes from the famous Meteor crater, located in the desert of Arizona, USA. Formed about 50,000 years ago by the impact of a giant meteorite, estimated at 300,000 tons, the crater is 1.6 km in diameter and 170 meters deep and perfectly preserved. Discovered in 1891. Mainly composed of kamacite, taenite and schreibersite, 3 alloys of iron and nickel which do not exist on earth because they have cooled very slowly in space by flying for several billion years: 10 to 100 celcius degrees every 100 million years! A rare phenomenon: Carbon grains transformed under the power of the impact and its heat, into small diamonds! Approximately 30 tonnes were collected
Object of Curiosity sublimates this exceptional specimen thanks to an exclusive horizontal levitation display. This ingenious system defies the laws of gravity. Inspired by steampunk design, this presentation mixes science and art, giving a retrofuturistic touch to this heavenly fragment.
