A relic of a vanished past
This subfossil tusk belonged to Hippopotamus lemerlei, a species of hippopotamus endemic to Madagascar, now extinct. Smaller than its African relatives, it once roamed the island’s rivers and marshlands. We see this difference in size especially on the photo in front a skull of nowadays hippopotamus.
A refined and elegant display for a rare curiosity.
