Giant hermit crab (DARDANUS MEGISTOS)
PU1239-1
Originally from Cebu, in the Philippines, DARDANUS MEGISTOS – also known as the white-spotted hermit crab – is one of the largest hermit crab species known.
Because its abdomen lacks a protective carapace, this crustacean is constantly searching for an empty shell to shelter in. This particular specimen had adopted a Tonna galea (cannelated tun) as a protective shell.
Its orange body covered in white spots and its especially developed claws make it a true marine curiosity, highly prized in the world of cabinet of curiosities.
Displayed under a glass dome on a black wooden base, it allows you to observe both the morphology of the crab and the protective shell it selected.
