Fulgurite from the Mauritanian Desert
PUMI2671-2
Fulgurites are the spectacular result of a lightning strike hitting the ground. When a bolt of lightning strikes the desert sand, the immense energy released generates extreme heat, melting the silica into a natural glass tube.
As it cools, this fragile glass becomes encased in a layer of solidified sand, forming a delicate and unpredictable structure.
These rare formations are found in arid deserts, particularly in Libya and Mauritania, where the absence of trees leaves the sand as the only target for lightning. Fulgurites are extremely fragile, making their extraction without breakage a true challenge.
Displayed under a glass dome, set on a brass base, this is the only safe way to hold in your hand a lightning. A must have in any cabinet of curiosities.
