Fossil tree fern bark - LEPIDODENDRON- (Poland)
PUFO481
Lepidodendropsis is a fossil genus of lycophytes in the family Lepidodendraceae. It is also the name used for the patterns left by the bark of this prehistoric tree. Fossils of this primitive tree abound in the carboniferous layers of all continents, hence the concept of a worldwide flora more or less uniform to the Carboniferous, the «Lepidodendropsis flora». When the tree grows it happens that the bark comes off and we see a smaller pattern appear on an "inner bark" layer. The fossils of this other pattern are called "knorria". This tree fern reached 30 meters high.
