Polished ATRINA VEXILLUM shell
AN494
This huge mussel, called ATRINA VEXILLUM or "Flag pen shelll", belongs to the Pinnidae family. It is recognized by its elongated and triangular shape, similar to a large feather. In its natural habitat, it lives half-buried in the sand of the Indo-Pacific lagoons.
The shell presented here has been carefully polished to reveal its deep shine, between brown and purple. No tint treatment was applied: its naturally pearly surface captures the light. The base which is normally buried, directly shows the layer of mother-of-pearl, which is often sought by jewelers.
Mounted on a sober black base, a small elegant curiosity.
