Stingrays are part of the cartilaginous fish family They have a flat body with spirals on the dorsal part that are in fact their breathing system. This allows them to aspirate water and to reject it through the gill slits in part ventral, without taking sand.
The rays have a long tail with a venomous sting. This prod is replaced every eight to twelve months, depending on the temperature of the water and the wear of the existing prods. When a ray feels threatened, it straightens its sting and whips the intruder with its tail. Once the sting is inserted into the victim, the venom is released.
