Yellow cowfish (LACTORIA CORNUTA)
PU1252
LACTORIA CORNUTA, commonly known as the cowfish due to the two “horns” extending forward from its head, is a species typical of tropical reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its rigid bony carapace with an hexagon shape scales, protects it from predators, while its bright yellow colouring helps it blend in among branching corals.
This specimen has been naturalised and carefully recoloured to restore the original tones, which fade rapidly after death.
Displayed in an open black wood reliquary, it appears to float at the centre of the frame — in the spirit of classical cabinet of curiosities presentations, where a single specimen is enough to draw the eye.
