Reef Cornetfish on black base
PU976
What funny proportions: A thin fish that can reach 1.6 meters long and yet has a very small mouth: the cornet fish or Fistularia commersonii. It is found in the Indo-Pacific zone, from Australia to Costa Rica. But since 2000, it has arrived in the Mediterranean sea, by the Red Sea. Since 2007 it swims along the French coast. This very tapered body allows him to approach his prey from the front (fish and shrimp) while seeming little imposing. At the last second, it deploys its "protractile" jaw which sucks its prey. But there is no question of attacking big prey! It even changes its colour between day-time -green/blue- and night -with stripes-, to make itself even more discreet. A rare fish, but it spreads on the planet.
