This malachite block has extremely strong patterns. It comes from the "copper belt" in the province of Katanga, Congo, and is distinguished by its dark green hue. . Resulting from the oxidation of copper, this intense colour highlights the natural patterns of the stone, a hypnotic network of concentric circles and volutes, evoking a cartography of geological processes. Malachite has been prized as a pigment for its brilliant blue-green hues since antiquity, and was mentioned by Pliny the Elder in 77 AD.
