Brown filefish (STEPHANOLEPIS HISPIDUS)
PU1250
STEPHANOLEPIS HISPIDUS, commonly known as the brown filefish, inhabits shallow reef habitats from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of New York. During the winter season, it can move into warmer waters, with some individuals recorded off the coast of Florida.
This specimen comes from the aquarium of Genoa (Italy). After its death, it was carefully taxidermied; as with most fish, its natural colours (yellow/brown when alive underwater) faded rapidly and were therefore precisely restored through recoloration.
Displayed in a black wire-frame structure, the specimen appears suspended in space — a contemporary presentation perfectly suited to a modern interpretation of the cabinet of curiosities.
