Slice of Araucaria fossil wood (8.1kg)
PUFO303-1
About 220 million years old, this petrified wood from Madagascar went through the ages to become a mineral. This long process began when transported by rivers, the tree trunk was buried under sedimentary deposits and in that case a heavy layer of ashes from a volcano, then gradually, silica replaced carbon from the wood (this principle is called epigenization). It was a conifer now extinct: the Araucaria.
We have sawn and polished this fossilized slice of wood to reveal the growth rings as well as these elegant warm brownish/ orange colors.
