Fossil in cage : Pecopteris tree fern

PUFO370-2

This curiosity is not as contemporary as it may look like. This very geometrical display is around 300 million years old. Leaves of a prehistoric fern. It should be one of the famous tree ferns. Pecopteris first appeared in the Devonian period (400 Million years), but flourished in the Carboniferous. Plants bearing these leaves became extinct in the Permian period. This fossil comes from Montceau les Mines, in France, where coal has been mined during 160 years, and stopped in year 2000. These specimens are part of an old collection from 1970.
